Parents

Silva Psychology accepts direct requests for involvement from parents or carer’s following an initial phone discussion. However, parents of children attending government funded schools usually have a named link educational psychologist, and the service is free. Please go to FAQ to check that as a parent you need private educational psychology services.

Following the initial phone discussion, and if work is to commence, parents will be asked to complete a short information form about their child and sign a consent form agreeing to the commissioning of the EP work with their child and preferably with the involvement of the child’s school (certainly where the concerns are academic).

Silva Psychology Services can be requested for any child whose parents wish to learn more about their child’s current academic and/or social/behavioural abilities with a view to moving them forward in the area/s of interest or concern.

Parents typically request private assessment/consultation for their child:

a) Who is not necessarily under-achieving for their age, but would benefit from an overall child assessment covering current levels of literacy & numeracy attainment, cognitive ability, self esteem, pupil aptitudes, strengths and interests. Parents find the baseline assessment extremely useful to understand their child’s current position and then use that information to jointly formulate an educational plan with the EP, and the child’s teacher which is very specific to their individual child’s needs, strengths and interests.

b) Where there are academic, social and/or behavioural concerns in one or more specific areas. Typically consultation and assessment on specific areas often include the following (but the list is by no means exhaustive):

  • Literacy
  • Numeracy
  • Behaviour, Social and Emotional Understanding.
  • Gross Motor and Fine Motor Coordination and Planning
  • Sensory Issues
  • Development in the Early Years
  • Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome and Social Communication.
  • Moderate and Severe Learning Difficulties.

c) Who they consider to be gifted & talented. Consultation and Assessment focuses on ascertaining assessment information on the areas identified and programme planning in order to further develop the child’s special gifts or abilities at school and at home.
